The Best Homemade French Dip Squares

Ingredients

  • 2 cans of crescent roll dough
  • ½ pound of deli roast beef thinly sliced
  • 8 slices of provolone cheese
  • 1 medium onion thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 egg beaten, for brushing
  • Sesame seeds optional, for topping
  • For the dipping sauce:
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • Pinch of black pepper

Instructions

Step 1: Prep the Ingredients

  • Start by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grab a 9x13-inch baking dish and lightly grease it or line it with parchment paper.
  • In a skillet over medium heat, melt the butter and sauté the onions until they’re soft and caramelized—about 10 minutes. Stir in the garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, and a pinch of salt and pepper. The aroma at this point is heavenly! Set the onions aside to cool.

Step 2: Assemble the Layers

  • Roll out one can of crescent dough and press it into the bottom of the baking dish. Make sure to pinch any seams together for a smooth base.
  • Layer half the provolone cheese slices over the dough. Add the roast beef slices evenly on top, followed by the caramelized onions. Layer the remaining provolone slices over the onions. Finally, top everything with the second sheet of crescent dough. Pinch the edges to seal.

Step 3: Add the Finishing Touches

  • Brush the top layer with the beaten egg for that golden, glossy finish. If you’re feeling fancy, sprinkle sesame seeds on top for a little extra crunch. It’s those little touches that make these squares look as good as they taste.

Step 4: Bake

  • Pop the dish into your preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and puffy. Let it cool for about 5 minutes before slicing into squares. Resist the urge to dive in immediately—they’re worth the wait!

Step 5: Make the Dipping Sauce

  • While the squares are baking, prepare the dipping sauce. In a small saucepan, combine the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, garlic powder, and black pepper. Simmer for 5 minutes, then pour into small bowls for serving. This sauce is liquid gold—don’t skip it!
