Parmesan and Spinach Cheese Twists: A Quick, Tasty Snack

Ingredients

  • 1 sheet of puff pastry you’ll find it in the freezer section
  • 1 cup of fresh spinach chopped (I like to use a handful or two)
  • ¾ cup of grated Parmesan cheese
  • ½ cup of shredded mozzarella cheese don’t skimp on this!
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil or melted butter if you’re feeling indulgent
  • ¼ teaspoon of garlic powder optional, but it adds a nice flavor
  • Salt and pepper to taste for seasoning
  • 1 egg for egg wash

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat the Oven

  • First thing’s first—preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). This ensures that your twists will bake to golden perfection. You’ll want your oven nice and hot when these go in, so don’t skip this step.

Step 2: Prepare the Puff Pastry

  • Once the oven is preheated, it’s time to work with the puff pastry. If you’re using frozen pastry, let it thaw for about 10 minutes before unrolling it. This will make it much easier to work with.
  • Now, roll out the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface. You want to make sure it’s nice and smooth, so give it a quick roll with a rolling pin to ensure it’s about the same thickness all over. It should be about 1/8-inch thick, but don’t stress about perfection here.

Step 3: Prepare the Filling

  • In a small bowl, combine your grated Parmesan, shredded mozzarella, and chopped spinach. You can also add garlic powder, salt, and pepper to taste. I like a little extra garlic for that savory kick, but it’s totally up to you. Mix everything together until the spinach is well-coated with the cheese mixture.

Step 4: Spread the Filling

  • Next, evenly spread the cheesy spinach mixture all over your puff pastry. Make sure to cover the entire surface, leaving just a small border around the edges. You don’t want the filling to spill out when you start rolling it up.

Step 5: Roll and Cut

  • Now comes the fun part—rolling! Gently roll the pastry up into a tight log, starting from one edge. Be careful not to squish the filling out as you go. Once it’s all rolled up, use a sharp knife to slice it into about 12 equal pieces. These will be your cheese twists.

Step 6: Egg Wash and Bake

  • For that beautiful golden finish, beat your egg in a small bowl and brush it over the top of each twist. This helps them turn crispy and gives them that gorgeous golden color when they bake.
  • Place the twists on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Make sure to leave a little space between each one so they have room to puff up as they bake.
  • Pop them in the preheated oven and bake for about 15-20 minutes, or until they’re golden brown and crispy. You’ll know they’re done when the cheese starts to bubble, and the twists look perfectly flaky.

Step 7: Enjoy!

  • Once they’re out of the oven, let them cool for just a minute or two (if you can wait that long—seriously, they smell so good!). Then, dig in! Serve these cheesy twists with a nice dipping sauce, or enjoy them as they are. Either way, they’re sure to be a hit.
