Start by dissolving the sugar in warm milk (not too hot, just warm enough to activate the yeast). Sprinkle the active dry yeast over the milk and let it sit for about 5 minutes. The yeast should get bubbly and frothy – this is how you know it’s working!
In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture, melted butter, and egg. Mix everything together until it forms a dough. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes. It should become smooth and elastic. If the dough feels sticky, add a little more flour until it’s just right.
Once it’s ready, place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm spot for about an hour. It should double in size. Don’t rush this step – the dough needs time to rise and become light and fluffy.
