Crispy Baked Wonton Tacos – The Ultimate Easy Weeknight Meal

Ingredients

  • Wonton wrappers: These are the key to the crispy taco shell. You can usually find them in the refrigerated section of your grocery store and they’re perfect for so many recipes.
  • Ground beef or another protein: I love using ground beef because it’s easy and flavorful, but you could definitely go for chicken, turkey, or even a veggie option like black beans.
  • Taco seasoning: You can either use a store-bought packet or make your own I’ve got a great homemade taco seasoning recipe if you’re interested. Either way, it adds that classic taco flavor we all know and love.
  • Shredded cheese: I prefer a mix of cheddar and Monterey Jack but honestly, whatever cheese you love will work just fine.
  • Lettuce tomato, and avocado: Fresh toppings really make these tacos shine. The cool, crisp lettuce and creamy avocado are the perfect contrast to the warm, cheesy taco filling.
  • Sour cream or salsa: You can skip this part if you want but a dollop of sour cream or a drizzle of salsa just makes the tacos that much better. Plus, who doesn’t love a little extra flavor?

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare Your Wonton Wrappers

  • The first thing you’ll want to do is preheat your oven to 375°F. While that’s heating up, take out your muffin tin and lightly spray each muffin cup with cooking spray. The wonton wrappers will be sitting in these cups, so make sure they don’t stick.
  • Now, grab your wonton wrappers. You’ll need one for each taco, and you’re going to press each one into the muffin tin like you’re making little taco bowls. Don’t stress if they don’t fit perfectly—it doesn’t need to be perfect. Once they’re all in place, pop the muffin tin in the oven for about 7-10 minutes, or until the wrappers are golden and crispy. Be sure to keep an eye on them—once they start to brown, they can go from crispy to burnt pretty fast.

Step 2: Cook Your Protein

  • While your wonton shells are baking away in the oven, it’s time to cook your protein. I love using ground beef for these tacos because it’s super easy, and the taco seasoning gives it that perfect flavor.
  • In a skillet, brown your ground beef over medium heat, breaking it apart with a spoon. Once it’s fully cooked, drain any excess fat. Add the taco seasoning and follow the directions on the packet (usually adding water and simmering for a few minutes). If you’re using a different protein like chicken or turkey, just cook it until it’s browned and cooked through, then shred it and add the seasoning.

Step 3: Assemble Your Tacos

  • Once your wonton shells are golden and crispy, it’s time for the fun part: filling them! Spoon a generous amount of your seasoned protein into each wonton shell. You don’t want to overfill them, but make sure each taco gets a good amount of meat.
  • Now, sprinkle a little shredded cheese on top of the meat. If you love cheese as much as I do, don’t be shy with it! Put the tacos back into the oven for about 3-5 minutes, just long enough to melt the cheese. It’s the perfect cheesy, gooey finishing touch.

Step 4: Top It Off

  • Once your tacos are out of the oven and the cheese is nice and melted, it’s time to add your fresh toppings. I like to keep things simple with shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, and a few slices of creamy avocado. If you’re a sour cream or salsa lover, now’s the time to add a dollop of sour cream or a spoonful of salsa to each taco.

Step 5: Serve and Enjoy

  • Once your tacos are assembled, it’s time to dig in! These crispy baked wonton tacos are perfect for serving up to your family or guests. You can even make a taco bar and let everyone build their own tacos with their favorite toppings. It's fun, interactive, and makes for a super relaxed dinner.
